..... THE BLUE CAVE.

 

Along the North Western Coast of Tanna are a large assortment of rock formations which vary from large singular formations to a series of seemingly associated structures which have been formed and eroded by the elements in a similar way. The end result is a shoreline of modified coral (limestone) on which mother nature has tried out her creative side. Hidden away at the very north western point on the island is the 'Blue Cave', which is accessible only by a leap of faith dive through a very short underwater tunnel. The dive is ludicrously short and once through you cannot understand why it was so hard, but the challenge of going down into the unknown, along with a vigorous swell on the outside, certainly buoys you with a sense of acheivement.

Once inside you are welcomed by a large expensive dome shaped cave which is lit by surreal light entering through a relatively small opening at the top. The cave has been formed over the centuries by the erosive effects of water coming down through the opening. The immediate impression is one of total silence and dreamlike serenity.

Initially, one cannot perceive any fish within the cave, and normally with more openly lit hole, colourful fish abound. However here it is different and only after a few minutes can you disern quite large schools of opaque fish swimming around in the caves waters. These schools appear not to be concerned by human visitors and can be followed around at some length.

The experience of the Blue Cave is one which you will not forget, and provides a completely different 'Tanna' experience.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Travel Tour 4 - Blue Cave Trip.

The Blue Cave - A seaside excursion 'picture framing' the Tanna coast and its beaches ........ Travel Tour Overview from Middlebush: • Two departures per day occur, except Saturday when no tours take place, Generally, tours would start either at 9.00am or later at 1.00 pm, with pickup prior to this. • Travel from middlebush down to the Whitegrass coast. • Board your board for a 1 hour trip along the Northwestern coast enjoying the landscape along the seashore, along with villages and outrigger canoes out fishing. • Arrive at and anchor off the Point where the Blue Cave is located. Put on snorkel gear provided and swim to the entrance of the cave. The depth of the cave entrance varies depending on the tides, being about a metre down at full tide and with the top of the entrance almost level with the water at low tide. • Enjoy about an hour at and around the Cave. • Return to the starting point and travel back to Esso's Nima accommodation to relax for the rest of the day. Less Travelling time from the Whitegrass Coast : • If the tour is taken from any of the accommodation along the whitegrass coast, then approximately 1 hour can be taken off to the tour time (half an hour each way). Blue Cave Travel Timeframe: • Approximate timeframe is 4 hours from leaving whitegrass until return. This depends on road and weather conditions. • The boatride to and from the Blue Cave is approximately 1.o hour. •Time spent at the Blue Cave is approximately 1.0 Hour.
